Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli Partners with Local Food Programs in April

LANCASTER, PA – Throughout the month of April, Isaac’s will hold its “Third Annual Bag Hunger” campaign benefiting local hunger relief programs in the areas where each of the 20 Isaac’s restaurants are located. “Being in the 'eating' business, we take it personally that nearly 37 million Americans live in food insecure households,” says Alan Jacobs, President. “That's a staggering number equal to about 12% of the entire population. ‘Bag Hunger’ is our way of providing an opportunity for employees and communities to lend a hand by supporting their neighborhood food pantry or soup kitchen. We are proud to support this effort, and feel it's our appropriate duty as restaurateurs.”

Hunger relief programs and homeless shelters receiving food donated by Isaac’s employees and customers include York Rescue Mission, Clare House in Lancaster, Chester County Cares, Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg, and Opportunity House in Reading.
The donation process is simple. From April 1 – 30, bring your donation to Isaac’s and anyone presenting food items will receive a coupon that can be redeemed for a free cup of soup. Most needed food items include canned meats, soups, vegetables (especially beans) and fruits (particularly applesauce), rice, pasta, instant mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese, coffee, canned juices and powdered milk, cereal and oatmeal, baking mixes and sugar, flour and cooking oil.
Isaac’s has restaurants across Harrisburg, Lancaster and York as well as in Berks and Chester counties, each known for their zany flamingos and distinctive bird-named deli sandwiches.

Debra Miller, United Way Coordinator of the Year!

I am very proud that my assistant, Debra Miller, was recently recognized as "United Way Coordinator of the Year" for the work she did organizing Isaac's 2008 giving campaign. At the awards banquet, she gave a wonderful speech. Here it is, in her words:

"THANK you for this recognition but it is honestly to be shared with others. I believe that good leaders surround themselves with great people and that is why our campaign was so successful.

Our Campaign has grown to 20 restaurants plus our Corporate Office, with hundreds of employees giving to 6 different United Ways…it’s a huge challenge. Each stores’ United Way Rep does incredible work soliciting their coworkers. I could never do this alone anymore.

This year was possibly our best campaign. Not because it was our largest dollars pledged (because it wasn’t), but because half (10 of our 20 restaurants) had 100% of their employees giving during our campaign and that is HUGE! While you may not think so, many of our employees are 16 and 17 year olds and Isaac’s is their first job. Our average employee age is early 20s.

If you go into an Isaac’s and see employees wearing this royal blue shirt that says, “I GIVE TO UNITED WAY,” please thank them because 100% of employees at that Isaac’s gave to United Way during our Campaign. They are wearing these shirts VERY proudly!

Debra holding up an Isaac's Shirt at the United Way Banquet

I’d like to leave you with one thought. We hear so much about this or that being wrong with the youth of today…

I’d like to say that I find our youth to be GENEROUS INVIGORATING INTERESTED COMMUNITY-ORIENTED SOCIALLY MINDED…people who really do want to make the world a better place. They make me VERY proud!

Thank you, again, for this recognition."

Ashlee Jones, an 18-year old who works in Downtown Lancaster, recently achieved her personal dream of being accepted on to the Dutchland Derby Rollers, Lancaster’s premier women’s flat-track Derby League.

Ashlee is part of the huge roller derby comeback that’s sweeping the country. It’s a DIY indie sport, and predominantly made up of women. There are three teams in the Dutchland Roller’s League, and Ashlee’s next goal is to be placed on one of these teams.

Ashlee is stoked about this opportunity! As she explains it, her world is basically three things: school (she’s a senior at Lancaster Catholic), Isaac’s (25 % Tron and 75% Deli), and roller derby. She practices about five hours a week on her $275 skates.

Ashlee got into this sport because she likes to have fun, likes the exercise, and likes to go fast. Her position is a blocker. She tries to support her team’s jammer while, at the same time, blocking the opposition’s jammer. She says it can be a little violent at times!

The Dutchland Rollers practice and have bouts at Overlook Skating Rink. Ashlee says it’s a great spectator sport, and everyone should come to Overlook to see a bout. The season runs from March through November and all the entrance fee money goes to charity.

Sounds like an Isaac’s night out to me! Who’s up for it?

New Adventure for Isaac’s!

For 25 years, Isaac’s has been a Downtown Lancaster mainstay of fresh, healthy sandwiches, soups and salads served in a family-friendly environment designed to entertain and delight customers. We have built a business focused around lunch, catering and take-out. Evening business has always been secondary for our Downtown location.

In 2008, we'll be adding alcohol service to our existing menu at our Downtown location. After being in business for 25 years, this decision was driven by customers who asked for beer, wine and beverage choices for their evening dining options. We will also improve our outdoor café space to offer downtown residents and visitors to the anticipated convention center a superb outdoor dining experience similar to those found in big cities.

Our timeline calls for this service to be available by early summer. We do not plan to add these beverages at other Isaac’s locations, and our menu selections will not change.

This is an exciting new venture for Isaac’s and we anticipate continuing with the same commitment to customers, employees and community on which we have built our reputation.

We welcome your feedback as we go through this process.

Books, books and more books!

I'm excited to report that two Isaac's have become official BookCrossing Zones! Check out what BookCrossing is all about at BookCrossing.com. It's sort of a world wide library without walls, where you can pick up books to read, and also share your books with others. I love the concept! They have an excellent FAQ.

This all got started when a customer in Isaac's in Spring Ridge (Wyomissing), "Released" a book in the restaurant. "Released" is BookCrossing vernacular for leaving a book for someone else to find. We were intrigued, and tracked down the customer to see what this was all about. One thing led to another, and now we have an official bookshelf in our lobby that she keeps well stocked! You can see some of the books here.

We got to know our Spring Ridge Bookcrosser, Janet Selman. She is a certified nurse midwife with a practice in inner city Reading. She is an avid reader, and loves the serendipity and karma of BookCrossing - you never know where a book will eventually end up. (The books are individually marked, and you can follow their travels on the Internet.) She also takes children's books to her practice and she knows that, for the kids she sees in her clinic, these might be the only books they have.

Janet is also involved in Greyhound rescue, and owns three, plus she always has one or two fosters. She also has two children and a maniac cat. What a household!

Janet enjoys the chatting, forums and book rings on Bookcrossing.com. She is currently reading African Diary by Bill Bryson.

Our other Book Zone is in Isaac's in Downtown Lancaster. It's managed by the staff. Here are some of the recently released books. This location also has free WiFi, so you can take your laptop and go online to journal about your books while you are in the restaurant!

Personally, I like to read nonfiction and, in the past, I always saved books after I read them. I guess I always wanted to have them, just in case I needed to check a fact, or something like that. But somewhere along the line, I discovered that giving books away suddenly increased my pleasure ten-fold! Now I never own books. I buy them, read them, and then give them away. You should try it! It feels great!

If you’re a BookCrosser, and interested in starting and managing a shelf at an Isaac's, send me an email at . We can help you get set up! Read this to get started!

What’s that box in the lobby?

During this holiday season, you’ll probably see a collection box filled with toys, cleaning supplies, or clothing, in the lobby of your neighborhood Isaac’s. What’s that about?

Well, at Isaac’s, part of our mission statement is to give back to our communities. We, in the Central Office, encourage the stores to figure out their own way to live the mission, without telling them exactly what to do. Many choose to benefit charities by collecting stuff during the holidays, and that’s why you probably see a drop-off box sitting in the lobby!

Here is a list of some of the things employees in our 20 restaurants are doing to put our mission statement in to action:

Isaac’s in Greenfield
Collecting new and used toys for Goodwill
Employees volunteer to help sort and distribute donated toys at the Boys & Girls Club.

Isaac’s in Downtown Lancaster
Collecting hats and mittens for the Water Street Rescue Mission

Isaac’s in Spring Ridge
Adopting a family from the Beacon house. It consists of a single mother and 4 boys all under the age of ten.

Isaac’s in Lionville (Exton)
Employees are organizing a giving tree. They have a nondenominational evergreen in their lobby with ornaments on it with items to buy and bring back. The organizations are- Women of Hope, Holy Family Home, Birthright, Crisis Residential, and Bethesda Project. They are doing this through Sts. Simon and Jude Church in West Chester.

Isaac’s in Paxton Street (Harrisburg near Bass Pro)
Employees “adopted” a family through the YWCA of the greater Harrisburg area. They are putting the wish list on an angel tree in the lobby to encourage customers to help out, as well.

Isaac’s in Hershey
Employees have chosen the Leukemia and & Lymphoma Society. They are collecting art supplies (markers, crayons, paint, colored paper, etc.) for children with cancer, to be distributed in the various hospitals.

Isaac’s in Thornbury (West Chester)
Employees adopting a family through Chester County Cares. There are seven children they are getting gifts for.
Employees will be volunteering in a local soup kitchen.

Isaac’s in West York
Collecting food for the York County Food Bank
Gives soup every week to the York Rescue Mission.
Will be sponsoring a family for Christmas, where the employees collect gifts for a particular family.

Isaac’s in Silver Spring (Mechanicsburg)
For the third year, employees are “adopting” a family from the Domestic Violence Shelter. This is a family who has been safely housed at the shelter for a while and is ready to go on their own. They have their wish list and employees will be buying and wrapping the gifts for mother and children.

Isaac’s in South York Plaza
Monthly contributes soup to Our Daily Bread soup kitchen.
Collecting food for the York County Food Bank

Isaac’s in West Shore (Lemoyne)
Collecting Toys for Tots

Isaac’s Central Office Staff
Collecting supplies for Clare House
Volunteering to clean up and paint at the North Museum

In addition to all this, we recently completed our employee United Way pledge drive for 2008, and we achieved an amazing 86% participation rate, with an average pledge of almost $100 per employee!

Check out what’s going on at your local Isaac’s, I am sure they are collecting for a worthy cause. They would be extremely grateful if you would help out with a contribution of your own next time you drop by for a sandwich and soup. And the world would be blessed through your actions. Happy Holidays, everyone!

I’m extremely pleased to report the success of Amanda Barber, Age 20, in the Philadelphia Marathon on November 18! Amanda has been a “Tron” (Waiter/Waitress in Isaacsspeak) in Downtown Lancaster for about two years. This was her first ever Marathon! Here are her stats:

BIB Number: #556

Clock Time 4:53:15 (From the time the gun went off until she arrived at the finish)

Chip Time 4:49:46 (This is 3 1/2 minutes shorter than her clock time, which means it took that long to get to the start line after the race started. The “Chip” is an electronic timing device that is attached to the shoe.)

Overall Place 5,660th out of 6,906 runners (she was ahead over over 1,000 runners)!

Gender Place	2,127th

Age Grade 46.8%

Pace per mile	11:03.3

Time at Half 2:18:23

Time at Mile20	3:34:40

It’s appropriate for Marathon runners to write their name across the front of their shirt so the crowd can cheer support by yelling the names. Amanda wrote “GO CRAZY” on her shirt, so she ran with the enthusiastic yells of “Go Crazy!” in her hears. Next time you see her, make sure you tell her “Go Crazy!”

Isaac’s FAQs

One of the real pleasures of my job as President of Isaac's is reading the constant customer feedback we receive in my office. Anyone can go to our web site and click on "Contact Us" to send a comment to our Central Office. We get several comments every day.
Frankly, we have occasional complaints to hear and make right, but my favorite comments are the other questions and suggestions we get from customers.
Here are some typical questions, and our typical responses. Consider this a FAQs for Isaac's!

Q. We need an Isaac’s in Elizabethtown/Carlisle/Lehigh Valley/University City/ Rehoboth Beach/Maryland/Pittsburgh/Monongahela/Ohio/Kansas/Seattle! (We hear from customers all around the country.) I’d even work there part-time!
A. We have 20 restaurants, and we plan to keep growing in the South Central PA area. We are always on the look-out for new locations, and customer requests to come to specific towns and cities are factors that influence our decisions about where to look. If you want us in your town, send us an email! But sorry, we aren't taking long-legged steps to go out of state or across the country…yet!

Q. Your Creamy Tomato Pepper Jack Soup/African Chicken Stew/Tomato Florentine is the best! Can you please share the recipe since you shared your Cheeseburger Soup recipe?
A. Sorry, we consider recipes to be our “trade secrets” and do not share this information. However, we occasionally want to do something special for our Flamingo Fan Club members so we decided to share one of our favorite recipes recently - Cheeseburger soup! Sign up for the fan club if you want to receive other soup recipes once in a while. But you’ll just have to stop by one of our restaurants for our other popular soups. (Have you tried our Creamy Pepper Jack in our bread bowl? It is out of this world!)

Q. Why do you no longer carry the California Spinach Salad (or any other item)?
A. When we discontinue any menu item, it is because of slow sales. Our California Spinach Salad just wasn’t a big seller for us so we replaced it with our new Mediterranean Salad.

Q. Do you have nutritional information on your sandwiches?
A. Sure! We have it online here.

Q. I was wondering what the nutritional values are for a bowl of your Creamy Tomato Pepper Jack Soup. It is an amazing meal!
A. Thank you for your question about our Creamy Pepper Jack Tomato Soup. You are one of many customers to contact us for this information.

Q. Do you have nutritional information available on your other soups?
A. We do not have this information available for our soups. While we hope to have it available someday, we have hundreds of recipes and it would be a monumental task to accurately compile this information. They are also made from scratch daily in each restaurant. So while each soup maker follows the standard recipe, they might vary from batch to batch.

Q. Are you bringing back Thanksgiving-on-a-Bun?
A. Yes! Stop in on November 6th and enjoy our great sandwich through the end of the year! We’ve had many customers, throughout the year, contact us saying…”Bring it back!”, so we brought it back!

Q. Do you have any gluten-free items on your menu? Is your staff knowledgeable about this?
A. Please remember that we specialize in sandwiches! We always suggest to gluten-intolerant customers that they are welcome to bring their own bread in a baggie. However, please make sure our server and manager knows of your allergy so we can take all necessary measures to avoid any type of cross-contamination, etc.
As far as gluten-free items on our menu, it would be easier if you would tell us the items you are interested in and we will check labels for you. Please let us know so we can do some homework and then get back in touch with you.
While we will do everything to take good care of you, it is ultimately up to the customer to make sure they are eating items that do not cause them discomfort. We do share information with employees and have posters regarding allergies posted; however, please ask for a manager so they can give you the best service possible.

Q. Thanks for your community nights fundraiser program. My group/team/organization had a very enjoyable and profitable evening last night.
A. We are very proud of our community nights fundraising program. You can earn 25% of sales for your organization. Check it out on our web site for more details.

Q. Can you ship your pickle mix/Ikey Sauce/Pretzel rolls/soup to Saskatchewan, Canada?
A. Sorry, not yet. You'll need to visit Pennsylvania to indulge yourself in our Isaac's specialties!

So there you have Isaac's FAQs! If I missed a question that's on your mind, go to "Contact Us," and send it in! I look forward to answering it.
