Back in 1983 when I started Isaac’s, I created the Bird of Paradise that quickly became my favorite. Referred to as a BOP, melted Muenster cheese bubbles with green olives and melted Swiss holds fresh mushrooms in a perfect combination, grilled on rye bread, then topped with lettuce and tomato. This is a sandwich that warms the soul and is for those who think sandwiches are old-fashioned and boring!
In order to create the perfect sandwich, I needed to find a grilling process that blended the flavors. Doing so required retrofitting special custom broiler griddles with heavy steel plates to simultaneously toast the outside of the bread while melting the cheeses over the olives and mushrooms.
August is our anniversary month and, to celebrate, we’re going to be reuniting all the birds (and flowers) that started it all by bringing back the original menu for the month. So be sure to try the BOP …it tastes better than an olive martini yet blends cheeses like a pizza topped with veggies to create the perfect bite that satisfies your palate.
